What is a Doula?

By Trina Cobbler September 16, 2026

Hi, my name is Trina Cobbler, I am a Perinatal Wellness Doula. Some of you may be asking yourself….

What is that? Others may have heard of the term “doula” but never a “perinatal wellness doula.”

Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines birth as “ a state resulting from being born, especially at a particular time or place.” The perinatal stage refers to a very important timeframe between conception and 2 years postpartum where the family dynamic changes rapidly. I’ve always respected birth as a multilayered life changing event and view it as a full experience grounded in the wellbeing of a family, and not just the delivery of a baby. For the last 9 years, as a perinatal wellness doula, I’ve helped high risk women and their families navigate their health and wellness journeys while pregnant, been at their bedside during labor and delivery, and later, in the home for postpartum and newborn support. I have a holistic approach to maternal care and work in an ecosystem of wellness practitioners who provide

mental and physical support to balance doula care for families during this particularly sensitive time.

While supporting pregnant women, I work alongside them. Listening carefully and strategizing to help them create an individualized care plan that prioritizes their wellness and reduces stress. Watching women transform and become empowered by their pregnancy is a joy and my mission as a birth worker.
